How Do I ...?

Back to Questions

Q.  I have lots of antiques. Now it seems they're not as in style as they used to be. I hate to get rid of them. How do I make them work?

A.  Trends come and go. Classics will always remain with us. But tastes do change, and the challenge becomes how to incorporate what you already have with what you now like. Keep in mind that the paint colours in your room can be on-trend at very little cost, and bring a more contemporary feel to your home.

Accessories are also an important way to change the look of your room, and incorporate your antique pieces. Try a more contemporary lamp on your pie-crust table, and use simple silk cushions with elegant detailing on chairs and sofas.

Eliminate clutter (figurines, excessive numbers of photo, etc.) on table tops and in antique cabinets, and dispense with doilies. Over an antique sideboard, hang a contemporary piece of artwork, and don't forget to light your rooms properly. If you need help, enlist the skills of a decorator, and think twice before you dispense with furniture pieces you may later regret selling.
